Name: Muna Age: 42 Sex: female, fertile Profession: midwife, nurse Location: Fertility Tribe Territory (previously), Trading Bay, summoned by request Affiliations: Fertility Tribe (previously), nomadic Disposition: caring, strong-willed, moral
Character Background and Description
Muna is a travelling merchant at first glance. She sells wares at the Trading Hub, delivers messages while on the road, and has an odd collection of artifacts to peruse and barter for. But with a letter behind a marked brick, or slipped into the pocket of certain sellers at the Hub, you can summon The Midwife. With “miracle births” happening within infertile tribes, and the knowledge of childbirth mainly restricted to the Fertility Tribe, it’s difficult for the mothers and children to survive. But Muna trades her medical abilities for food and supplies. She is a trained nurse. Her main profession is midwife, but she is also capable of treating ailments, broken bones, etc. She is relied on by many tribes to help the sick and pregnant.
Muna was born into the fertility tribe. She bore two children, one fertile named Lila, and one unfertile, Oz. Lila went on to bear children of her own, but Oz left the tribe at the ceremonious age of 12 to learn the trade of another tribe, and Muna had no word from him since. She turned her attention to the safety of pregnant women and safe deliveries and devoted herself to the profession of midwife. While most adults traditionally left the tribe once they were too old to bear children, her medical skill was seen as a gift from God that made her worthy to stay. She very much enjoyed her work. She worked closely with mothers and children to ensure they were as healthy and happy as possible. She missed her own son Oz dearly and tried to find out more about his new life, but had no luck. She never stopped looking.
When she was 38, Muna was brought on a call outside the Fertility Tribe. She had rarely left the tribe before; there was more than enough work within their territory that she hadn’t much time to dwell on what life was like outside. But she had heard rumors that children were being born outside their tribe, and she was curious so she accepted. She accompanied another doctor, a member of council, and a rotating group of Military to the Energy Tribe, where they found a young mother clutching a bundle of ragged clothes. It started to wail when the group came in, and Muna watched in horror as they pulled the baby from its mother’s arms and gave it to her. She knew of babies without families who came to be raised with the Fertility Tribe, but had never questioned where they came from. Now that she knew, she protested and tried to make her way back to the mother, but was pulled out of the house and back the long journey home. She argued with the council member but was told this is simply how things are. The night after they returned, she kissed her daughter and grandchildren goodbye, took the stolen child, and left the Fertility Tribe to find the mother.
Muna is a black woman of average height. She wears her hair cropped short and her face has faint laugh lines. She has a strong, athletic build. She wears a few layers of long coats and sweaters over a linen shirt and corduroy pants with a pair of hiking boots. She keeps medical supplies in a camping backpack and also has small storage spaces within each tribe she works with.
She is a rather jolly woman, quick to smile and crack a joke. She has strong maternal instincts and treats each of her patients as if they were her family. But when angered, the true wrath of Muna has been summoned. She becomes cold with a glare that could cut steel. She has a strong sense of morality and is quick to lend a hand with duties outside of her medical expertise. She travels throughout Gator Bay to help the people she can, but she always keeps an ear out for news on her son, Oz.
